Mountain Bike Gears-Why You Need Them

October 3rd, 2009 Mountain Bike Sales Posted in Mountain Bike Accessories No Comments »

Today's Mountain Bikes ften come with as many as 27 gear ratios. Even a 10-speed of previous years seemed like a lot. Isn't this overkill? Not necessarily. To find out why, let's consider how gears work and from that you should then understand the importance of Mountain Bike gears.

If there were no multiple sprockets and derailleurs the chain would just wrap around a single rear wheel sprocket. That would fix a single 1:1 gear ratio. In other words, the wheel would spin no faster or slower than you could pedal it.

Mathematically, it works out that a standard 26" wheel would then travel about 82 inches (208 cm) in one revolution. Pedaling 50 revolutions per minute would push you forward about 340 feet in one minute. That's less than 4 miles per hour (6 kph). Pretty slow for anything but uphill conditions.

How You Benefit

Having more Mountain Bike gears allows you to go faster with the same number of revolutions pumped by your legs. At the same time, additional gear ratios allow you to do that without exerting excess effort. It smooths out the force needed over varying terrain and conditions.

Hills, bumps, and more require you to push harder. Sometimes that's exactly what you want. But if you want to maintain the same force and still get speed, extra gear ratios are a must. Effective mountain bike gears allow you to maintain the required force to handle hilly terrain.

One of the basic mechanisms that makes that possible is the derailleur. These are small metal devices that allow the bike to shift smoothly from one sprocket size to another.

The sprocket size is related to the gear ratio, and so to the amount of force needed to maintain a certain speed. Smaller sprockets are easier to turn. But, that tiny sprocket has to be turned through more revolutions to make the same distance.

Balancing those two factors makes it possible to move uphill more easily and still maintain a reasonable speed. On a level surface, a larger sprocket requires only moderate force and let's you go faster.

At the same time, the rear derailleur has to keep the chain tense in order to avoid having it fall off the sprocket. That's just another of the ways in which these little mechanisms are so clever.

Modern Exception

There is a current exception to all this complexity, though: the singlespeed mountain bike.

A singlespeed has only one gear ratio, but still allows coasting. It seems very limiting, but it have two good purposes: low weight and simplicity.

The nine rear sprockets and three front ones (plus cables and more) on a standard bike add a fair amount of weight. At the same time, because they are more complex, there is more to maintain and more to go wrong. A singlespeed reduces the weight to a minimum and lowers the need for maintenance and the possibility of failure.

Singlespeeds are set according the rider's ability and experience. But for those looking for an alternative, they're worth considering.

To decide whether you prefer a singlespeed or 27 gears, consider the type of riding you plan to do and your abililty. Unless you have easy terrain, a singlespeed takes considerable effort.

So know you know why gears are important and particularly why Mountain Bike gears provide a better riding experience.

Are You Puzzled By The Mountain Bike?

September 30th, 2009 Mountain Bike Sales Posted in Buy A Mountain Bike No Comments »

For many years one kind of bicycle dominated the scene: racing bikes. With narrow seats, downward curving handles, and a sleek look, they were what everybody rode. Now, Mountai Mountain Bike a> re everywhere.

There are several good reasons for that, not least of which is that Mountain Bikes reatly expand the territory for cyclists. To see how, we have only to look at their unique design features.

Go Anywhere Bikes

The phrase ATBs or 'All Terrain Bikes' sums up the idea. It signals a bike that can go anywhere - dirt trails, unpaved mountain roads, and more. Part of what makes this possible are the large, knobby tires. Another key element are the wider wheels. But, in recent years, the addition of new front and rear suspension designs has helped enormously.

That suspension comes in four basic types today. Fully rigid models are just straight forks with no cushion or shock absorbers. A hard tail lacks rear suspension. A soft tail, by contrast, has basic rear suspension in which the frame flexes. Dual suspension offers front and rear cushion, along with a rear shock that permits wheel pivot.

All but the first make possible a much smoother, better controlled ride on uneven surfaces. Even hardy cyclists suffer less fatigue and can extend their riding time on a mountain bike, thanks to the different designs. Suspension that moves anywhere from 2-8 inches is one of the basic reasons. That makes possible much less stress on the joints.

Tires Make A Difference

Wider, knobby tires are another essential element. The inner dimension of racing bike tires may be as small as 18mm (0.8 inches). Mountain Bike s are typically 35-50mm (1.5-2.2 inches) or more. That extra width helps increase control and reduce the force on the frame. Both make for a smoother ride in rough terrain.

Add to that set of attributes a handlebar design that differs radically from its racing cousin. The wide, flat, straight geometry is far superior for controlling the bike on bumpy, sharply curving roads. An alternative design, riser handlebars allows for even more control

What About Ground Clearance?

Another key area of difference is higher ground clearance. Sprockets and other gear on racing bikes can be low enough to the ground that the pedals clear only an inch or two. Mountain bikes have much more ground clearance both on the pedals and the frame as a whole. Rocks, uneven ground, vegetation, and more make that a necessity. A 13" clearance is not uncommon.

Some contemporary designs have even eliminated the chain, a bigger problem with Mountain Bikes han racing models. In both types, getting pants greasy is a common problem. But the issue goes farther with Mountai Mountain Bike a> Dirt, gravel, and plants can more easily make their way into chains and sprockets in the wilderness. Chainless models solve that problem.

Mountain bikes have come a long way since their widespread introduction in the 1980s. But they still provide the one thing that is essential in any bike: a fun ride in terrain away from the crowds.

You Can Save Money With Cycle2Work!

cycle2work

Cycle2Work Can Save You Money

If you are a UK resident for tax purposes and are paying tax through the PAYE scheme, you should be able to obtain a new bike under the government's Cycle2Work(C2W) scheme. The idea of the scheme is to tackle congestion, improve air quality and help out the NHS...you get the plan.

The main thing is that you can get a cheap bike without any catches.  But,  like most government schemes it's quite complicated.  So, hopefully the information below will give you enough to start your investigation on how to obtain a cheap bike.

Here goes:

  1. Your employer needs to sign up to the C2W
  2. Employer buys  the  bike on behalf of  their employees
  3. Provided bike is being for commuting to work there's tax relief on the price
  4. Employer should be able to claim back VAT
  5. Best to aim for £1000 price limit, as things become complicated thereafter
  6. Discount should work out at about 40%
  7. You are effectively renting bike from your employer via salary
  8. At the end of the loan period your employer should let you buy the bike.

Hopefully, that provides enough to get things going if you are interested.

So, if your employer signs up, what bikes are worth considering within a £1000 price limit?  According to the experts the following are a good place to start:

  • Gary Fisher Montare
  • Scott Scale 70
  • Marin Nail Trail
  • Specialized Rockhopper Pro
  • Giant Trance X5
  • GT I-Drive 5 XCR

There's bound to be others you will fancy, and it might be worth your time taking a look in the Mountain Bike Deals Online Shop.  All the best if you decide to take advantage of  Cycle2Work.
